                               A young climber

In the last few years, 22-year-old climber Gina Saskia has spent lots of time travelling around the world，taking part in indoor climbing events in World Cup competitions. Although she loves her sport, she isn’t so keen on climbing plastic walls. What is close to her heart is being outdoors climbing real rock. Like most climbers, she believes it's the true form of the sport. 

The World Cup was originally organised so that climbers could compete against one another fairly. With outdoor climbs in the mountains, environmental factors can have an effect on a climb – especially in winter- but with indoor walls nothing changes. The other difference is that events at climbing centres attract huge crowds- something that doesn’t happen out in the mountains.

When taking part in a World Cup event, Gina’s approach is to create a fun atmosphere that the crowd will enjoy. She says they in turn encourage her, and this helps reduce her stress levels. Despite it being a competition, Gina believes the only person she's competing against is herself. She thinks that what’s important is putting in her best effort. When this happens, she's satisfied with the result. And whether she wins or not, she always enjoys getting to know other climbers.

Gina recently applied to university and is now three months into a business degree. Although she thought about carrying on climbing full-time, she says she realised that education was as important to her as a climbing career. She believes she can study for a degree and still climb part-time- as long as she stays fit. What's amazing is that she also manages to do the same things as other young people-she hangs out with friends and watches movies too!
