Joan's Appointment to Dentist

My friend Joan is afraid of the dentist, and despite having a toothache all the time she refuses to go! She has had pain in her teeth for about four months, and now Joan thinks that it is affecting her overall health because chewing food has become a problem. She called me yesterday and said, “Karina, I think I need to see a dentist. After eating, I get a horrible pain in my stomach. I looked at Baidu and read that it could be because of dental problems. I know that I should ‘grow up’ and stop being afraid. I don’t think I can go alone. I might as well as be a ‘big girl’ and make sure to visit the dentist before this gets more serious. I have so many health problems because of this already. If you have time, can you please come with me? I know that I cannot go alone.”

I replied, “Of course. I can come along. You are my friend, and I will be there for you. At least, with me by yourself, you won’t feel so afraid. I can be as supportive as I can. Is there anything that you think would help you relax?”

Karina was quiet for some time, but then she said, “Yes, when I was little, my mom would comb my hair and sing to me while the dentist cleaned my teeth. Perhaps you could do the same with a comb? Can I treat you to lunch as a favor?

“It would be my pleasure.” I said.

“Great, I will make the appointment for Friday at 10:30 A.M. Can you make it?” she said.

“I certainly can!” was my reply. I am so happy that Joan has decided to see the dentist. We have been friends for seven years, and this is the first time I know she will see a specialist.
