学习单词只是“背单词”吗？为什么课上我会给每个重点词汇大量丰富场景的例句，并在容易在中文上混淆的词汇作详细的对比。

学习单词的方法其实是学句子，但很多人没意识。

字典里的解释：an opinion that someone gives you about what to do in a particular situation.

重点词：what to do

Advice is a term which is used in the sense to counsel. One can give advice for the problem or can simply give a solution. Advice, seems to be an opinion with command or control and even manipulation.

Advice是指忠告的意思。可以是问题提出建议，也可以给出解决方案。advice有时是一种命令或控制甚至给人有操纵感的意见。

The word advice is used in the sense of ‘counsel’ as in the sentences given below.

advice这个词的关键是“给出忠告”（希望对方能follow听从的）如下面的句子所示。

他给他兄弟提了一个忠告。

He gave a piece of advice to his brother.

(You get the idea that he counseled his brother.他给他弟弟出主意了)

老师给了他一条忠告。

He received a piece of advice from his teacher.

我不明白为什么越来越多的人不听从这个建议。

I don't understand why more and more people don't follow this advice.

Since advice is counsel it has more value. It is presented to you by someone who has experience. You can certainly choose not to follow an advice given to you. However, generally advice is given to be followed.

既然advice 是忠告，它是有价值的。它是由有经验的人呈现给你的。你当然可以选择不遵循别人给你的建议。但是，一般advice给出就是希望follow遵循的。

正如words of advice---忠言

suggestion 仅是提出一个供人参考的想法。

字典里的解释： 

an idea or plan put forward for consideration

A suggestion on the other hand ，is used in the sense of giving an idea. 

Suggestion, seems to be used as a plan or an idea without any command or control and manipulation. It is used to describe any suggestion in general.

suggestion只是用来表示给出一个想法的，是一种没有任何命令、控制和操纵的想法。一般用来描述任何概念上提出的想法。

The word suggestion is used in the sense of ‘giving an idea’ as in the sentences given below.

关键点：给出一个个人的想法

他提出可以这样做。（说出他自己的想法)

He suggested that it could be done in this way.

她提出了一个使俱乐部易于运作的建议。(她给了一个想法）

She gave a suggestion for the easy functioning of the club.

在这种情况下，我需要你的意见（想法）。

I need your suggestion in this case.

The word suggestion has its verb form in the word ‘suggest.’

单词“suggestion”的动词形式“suggest” 也是一样的含义。

Since a suggestion is just an idea someone has about something, no one expects you to follow every suggestion that comes your way. Maybe you take time and consider and follow it only if it fits you too.

因为suggestion只是某人对某事的一个想法，没有人希望你遵循这个所谓的建议。也许只有当它也适合你的时候，你才会考虑并遵循它。

以下句子再体会一下suggest表达的含义，不可以与advice替换的语境。

她的老板对这个建议不太感兴趣。

The suggestion didn't go down very well with her boss. 

我可以提个想法吗？

Can I make a suggestion? 

你能推荐一本好词典吗？

Can you suggest ---a good dictionary?

基于advice的“忠告”含义, 和suggestion的“提出想法”，我们可以更好地记忆它们的固定搭配。

“忠告”是个抽象概念，因此advice不可数， 而suggestion 表示所提的建议或具体想法是可数的。

give(sb) advice 

offer(sb.) advice 

follow the advice

come up with a suggestion 提出建议

give sb. a suggestion 给某人一个意见

make a suggestion 提出建议

offer a suggestion 

put forward a suggestion

reject the suggestion 反对这个建议

agree to the suggestion  同意这个建议

“建议”这一简单翻译有误导，所以，背单词没用，只见过一两次句子也没用，需要大量的体会，感知差异和词汇的真实用法。
